If you currently work in, or are looking to join the hair and beauty industry then you will almost definitely come across the dilemma of whether to accept an employed position or take the plunge and become self-employed. Unfortunately there is no easy answer as both options have advantages and disadvantages and very much depend on personal circumstances. We will look at the pro's and cons of self-employment in this article, but first some background on us.
If you don't know us already then let me introduce the co-owners of the Hideout Hair and Beauty Salon, Allesley Village, Coventry. Haylee has been working in the industry since leaving college. She has had numerous employed roles in salons from junior up to management level. She took the jump into self-employment within a salon in 2011 before opening up the Hideout Hair Salon in 2016. Kimberlee followed a similar route, working in numerous spa venues as head therapist before going self employed and then opening up the Hideout Beauty Salon in 2017.
'self-employment is tough and I have questioned whether it was the thing to do on numerous occasions. I love what we are doing now though and am sure we have a good business and great clients and am looking forward to the future' Haylee
Lets now look at the options open to you once qualified to style hair, carry out beauty treatments etc. First we will bullet point the general advantages and disadvantages before looking specifically within a salon setting as opposed to working from home or on a mobile basis.

Haylee & Kim
As a hairstylist it is our job to always make sure your hair is always showcased at its optimum! At The Hideout Hair & Beauty Salon, Coventry we believe that looking after the condition of your hair is just as important as how it looks. The OLAPLEX additive is a proven scientific formula that works on a molecular level, seeking out chemical, thermal and mechanical damage and restoring it! I know, amazing right?! A small amount goes a long way and makes all the difference. You only have to try it once to notice the difference.
Here is a brief introduction to the OLAPLEX range we use at The Hideout. The 3 step system links and rebuilds broken bonds in the hair before, during and after any chemical service. Here's how it works:
Stage 1: The BOND MULTIPLIER (OLAPLEX 1) is added into your hair colour, ensuring it is absorbed into the core of the hair whilst the cuticles are open. It works on restoring the core and rebuilding any damaged areas that had been caused previously.
Stage 2: The BOND PEFECTOR (OLAPLEX 2) is used in-conjunction with OLAPLEX1 and is administered at the basin, after colour removal and left on for 10-15 minutes. It locks in the proteins and all the repairing action that has taken place during your colour process.
Stage 2 can also be used as a mini treatment which acts as a cutting lotion, smoothing any fly away hairs and sealing in shine whilst your hair is blow dried.
Stage 3: The HAIR PERFECTOR (OLAPLEX 3) is an optional extra. It is a take away product available at an additional cost, you would use it as a weekly treatment to just maintain and continue your hair therapy journey.
We never use anything at The Hideout that we don't fully endorse and indeed use ourselves. OLAPLEX has provided a proven and popular treatment that combines hair care and added performance for any colour treatment and we hope you will drop by and try it out for yourselves in the near future.
See you all soon,
A patch test is a bit like a doctor testing for allergies. A small amount of a substance that may be potentially used on your skin or on a hair treatment is placed on the skin just behind your ear.
At The Hideout in Coventry we perform a patch test at least 48 hours before any complete chemical treatment is carried out, this gives us plenty of time to see if your body might react negatively towards the treatment.
It may sound a bit dramatic but with the rising influence of social media, more people are turning to hair and beauty treatments as a necessity rather than a luxury. Similarly and possibly due to its growing presence in the market, Paraphenylenediamine (PPD) allergies are also on the increase. Luckily there is a growing awareness of the potential dangers of chemical treatments but you can never be too cautious where your own health is at risk.
No patch test no treatment
It is a common occurrence at the Hideout, Coventry to be told by clients that "It will be ok, I have my hair coloured all the time" or "I`ve had it done elsewhere and they didn't need to do this". We always reply "no patch test no treatment". It's not that at The Hideout we are big headed or don't value the business, it's because we value our clients old and new too much to risk their health and safety.
What we do to perform the test:
For hair colourants, semi-permanent or permanent, we mix up a base colour which contains the most PPD. This is then put on the skin behind the ear and the client signs a record card stating the date and what has been used and whether its hair colour, lash glue, perm, lash lift serum, coloured mousse, eyebrow/lash tint etc. The client is then advised to look out for any itching, burning, redness on the skin. If any symptoms arise we do tend to try the other side just to make sure it wasn't a one off sensitivity, but under absolutely no circumstance will a chemical treatment take place until we are certain the client is ok with the chemical. Absolutely nothing gets done at The Hideout Coventry unless the patch test is performed and after 48 hours if the client hasn't reacted.
Are these treatments safe?
You may well be considering a hair or beauty treatment and are somewhat concerned about the potential dangers, especially after seeing some dramatic pictures readily available on the Internet. You are right to be cautious and as such you should ensure your salon asks you the right questions, do the right pre-treatment tests and allow you to ask any questions you have regarding the treatment.
I hope that gives you some information and advice on the issue of patch tests. Any further questions please drop us a line.
Hope to see you all soon.
